Mark Wilson\'s Complete Book of Magic does explain how to make some big effects for cheap.

PK, get some tricks made for kids shows, do a show for someone you know, or your church; if the kids are younger, say three to seven, even if you do mess up a trick, they will never know and they don’t care.
You will be very surprised with the results, it is a great start and its how I started
